Chitrasopanam Art Foundation was founded by Sri. Sasi Edavarad in the year 2010 and it was registered as a Trust in the year 2022. Chitrasopanam Art Foundation is a center dedicated to the preservation, appreciation, propagation and promotion of traditional Indian art, with a special focus on Kerala mural painting, also known as Sopana Chitrakala. These murals are created using natural colors on natural surfaces, reflecting centuries-old practices rooted deeply in Kerala’s temple art tradition. The foundation aims to keep this heritage alive by offering authentic education and experiences to art enthusiasts, students, and researchers.
Kerala Mural painting evolved as a distinctive artistic tradition rooted in the classical Indian mural heritage, particularly influenced by the Ajanta cave paintings. As the Ajanta tradition declined, its stylistics and narrative elements gradually moved southward, impacting temple art in Tamil Nadu and eventually reaching Kerala.
By the 8th century CE, mural paintings began to flourish in Kerala, especially within temple architecture and religious settings. These early murals, rich in Hindu mythological themes, marked the beginning of a regional visual culture that would later reach its artistic peak between the 14th and 18th centuries.
Chitrasopanam’s teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in classical Indian traditions, drawing from the Epics, Puranas and Dhyanaslokas based on Indian iconography. The foundation emphasizes traditional methods of sketching and painting, using a syllabus that blends age-old practices with thoughtful integration of modern tools and technologies. Students are introduced to the use of natural pigments, traditional measurement systems, and foundational techniques that help them internalize not just the art form, but its cultural and spiritual context.
Our two-year course is divided into four levels: Praveshika (Initiation), Naipunya (Specialization), Acharya I, Acharya II. It starts from the very basics, making it accessible even to students with no prior experience. We also actively mentor research students in their projects related to the extraction, application, and preservation of natural colors.
In addition, the foundation promotes deeper understanding of aesthetics and iconography related to Kerala mural painting by organizing workshops, seminars, and similar educational initiatives that integrate these classical subjects into the learning experience.
Beyond education, Chitrasopanam is actively involved in art installations and restoration projects. The foundation has contributed to mural works in temples, schools, public and private spaces and has played a key role in restoring murals in temples. These projects not only revive the visual beauty of sacred spaces but also preserve their cultural and spiritual legacy for future generations.
Chitrasopanam Art Foundation stands as a bridge between the past and the future—preserving tradition while inspiring new creativity. Our mission is to honor, preserve, and advance the rich legacy of Kerala mural art through three key pillars: Teaching Artists, Artform Awareness and Conservation
“The Indian painting tradition combines both spiritual depth and scientific insight, capable of lifting even an ordinary person to profound levels of inner experience. Grounded in India’s rich philosophical heritage, this art form has been nurtured through guru-shishya parampara, keeping its essence alive across generations. It is my endeavor to share this rich tradition with the whole world" - Sasi Edaravad
